Order = listing completeness (address, phone, website, hours on file). It is earned, never sold — see How It Works.

How the Scene works

A directory is only worth using if you know how the order was decided. Here's the whole method, in the open.

1.

Pulled from public local data

The 1,044 listings were assembled in October 2026 from public sources — OpenStreetMap contributors and local business rosters. 660 have a street address on file, 284 a phone number, 201 a website. If a detail isn't public, we don't guess it.

2.

Owners claim free — verified by phone

Any owner can claim their listing for $0 and correct or complete it. Before a Verified badge goes on, we verify the claim with a real phone call to the business. No badge is ever self-awarded.

3.

Order is earned, never sold

In this first version, listings are ordered by completeness — the businesses with the most public information on file (address, phone, website, hours) sit at the top. A public-ratings layer comes later; when it does, it will be published the same open way.

The honesty rules: rankings are never sold, to anyone, at any tier. Paid Featured placement exists (see Pricing), but it is always clearly labeled, capped at 3 per category per city, and it never changes a listing's order in the Scene. National chains are labeled "Chain" rather than hidden — independents are the focus of the Scene, but the Scene stays complete. This version carries no star ratings, because the free public data behind it has none — we'd rather show you no rating than an invented one.

How the Weekly works

Mon.

Gathered

The week's events, openings, and List changes are gathered from the directory and local sources across the four cities.

Tue.

Drafted & checked

The issue is drafted, and every name, address, phone number, and hour in it is fact-checked against the List.

Wed.

Approved

A person reads the final issue and approves it before anything goes out. Nothing sends on autopilot.

Thu.

In inboxes, 6 AM

One free email, Thursday morning — read it with coffee. Unsubscribe anytime, no hard feelings.

Where the Weekly's businesses come from: straight from the directory. Every business named in an issue is one of the 1,044 listings above, and the spotlight rotates through all four cities — Westlake, Avon, North Olmsted, then Rocky River — following the same earned order as the Scene. Each issue carries at most one sponsor slot, always labeled Sponsored — and sponsoring never changes a listing's order in the directory. If it isn't local, it isn't in the Weekly.

Paid tiers buy visibility — a labeled Featured spot. They never buy rank. The order of the Scene is completeness today and public ratings later, and money doesn't move it.

Questions

What is The Ohio Scene?
A free local directory of 1,044 real businesses across Westlake, Avon, North Olmsted, and Rocky River, Ohio — restaurants, trades, shops, salons, offices, and services — assembled from public local data in October 2026. It's built to be the list a neighbor would hand you: complete, honest about how it's ordered, and free on both sides.
What does it cost?
Nothing to use, and nothing to be listed. A full listing, claiming it, and the Verified badge are $0 forever. Owners who want extra visibility can choose Featured ($19/mo founding rate) or Featured + AI ($49/mo) — those buy a clearly labeled placement, never a better position in the order.
How is the order decided?
By listing completeness. Each listing scores on the public information it has on file — street address, phone, website, hours — and the most complete listings come first. Money never changes the order. A public-ratings layer is planned for a later version; when it arrives, the formula will be published here, the same way this one is.
Why are there no star ratings?
Because this version is built on free public data, and that data has no ratings in it. We won't invent numbers or borrow them from somewhere we can't stand behind. Listings are ordered by completeness instead, and the site says so wherever the order matters.
How do I get listed, or fix my listing?
Use the claim form above — it works whether you're claiming a listing that's already here or adding a business that's missing. Every claim is verified by phone before a Verified badge is applied, and corrections are made on that call.
What areas are covered?
Westlake (266 listings), Avon (212), North Olmsted (341), and Rocky River (225). The West Shore is bigger than four cities — Bay Village, Avon Lake, and Fairview Park are next as their data is pulled and cleaned.
Are chains included?
Yes, and they're labeled "Chain" on their cards. Independents are the focus of the Scene, but a directory that quietly deletes businesses isn't a directory — it's an ad. Everything real is on it; the label tells you which kind you're looking at.
What is The Scene Weekly?
The Scene's free weekly email, out Thursday mornings at 6 AM. Each issue carries the weekend's events on the West Shore, new business openings, one local business spotlight pulled from the List, and the best of the directory. No politics, no crime, no spam — local only — and you can unsubscribe anytime. It's free forever; sign up in the Weekly section above.
